A drunken driver with a history of speeding and reckless driving caused a head-on collision near Waynesboro that sent four people to the hospital on Saturday afternoon, Virginia State Police said.

Donald Lee Brogan Jr., 31, of Crimora, was driving northbound on Calf Mountain Road near Glen Kirk Presbyterian Church at 4:45 p.m. when he crossed his 1971 Chevrolet pickup truck over the center line and smashed into the oncoming 2002 Mercury Sable driven by Linda Lane, 49, of Waynesboro, police said.

The truck pushed Lane’s car backward, injuring the woman and two passengers, said Trooper W.H. Reid.

Lane, in critical condition, was airlifted from the scene to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Her passengers and Brogan were transported to Augusta Health in Fishersville. The passengers were treated and released. Brogan was later taken to U.Va.

Reid said both hospitalized drivers were being treated Sunday for non-life-threatening injuries.

“He was going too fast,” Reid said of the accident, which happened on a stretch of road with a default, unposted 55 mph speed limit. “Alcohol is believed to be a factor in [the wreck].”

Charges are pending against Brogan, who since 2003 has been convicted three times of speeding, and once each of reckless driving and following too closely. Charges of marijuana possession and violation of the terms of a Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program remain active in Rockingham County court.

According to court records, Brogan’s license is restricted to travel for work, VASAP meetings and medical care.
