A former Waynesboro man died early this morning after suffering a knife wound to the chest Wednesday night, Waynesboro police reported.

Police responded to the 700 block of King Ave. at about 11:40 p.m., where they found Jeffrey Allen Gischel, 45, suffering from the wound. He was transported to Augusta Medical Center and later to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he died after emergency surgery in the UVA Surgical Intensive Care Unit at approximately 7:58 a.m., Sgt. Gischel was recently living in the Baltimore-area, Walker said.

The case remains under investigation.
