Churchville woman killed in single-car accident

An 85-year-old Churchville woman was found dead Friday after the car she was driving veered off an isolated gravel road near Buffalo Gap.

State police found Virginia Stokes Harris dead on the scene of the accident, which occurred on Old Parkersburg Turnpike, 3.2 miles north of Route 42. Harris lost control of a maroon, 1987 BMW sedan on a sharp curve and drove off an embankment, striking a tree about 150 feet from the road, police said.

A passing motorist reported the accident at 12:30 p.m., but police said the time and cause of the wreck, and the cause of Harris's death, are still undetermined.

Harris's body was taken to Augusta Medical Center and her first of kin were notified, police said.
