A 73-year-old Staunton man pleaded guilty Monday in Augusta County Circuit Court to sexually assaulting a mentally disabled blind woman.

John Oehlerking faced an Augusta County Circuit Court judge Monday, and pleaded to a reduced charge of sexual battery, court officials said.

He was sentenced to a year in prison.

Authorities arrested John Oehlerking on May 31 on charges of forcible sodomy and aggravated sexual battery.

Oehlerking assaulted a 26-year-old woman at his Plaza Apartments home, said Investigator Brian Jenkins of the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office. Oehlerking and woman were acquaintances, Jenkins said.

The man was not the woman’s caretaker, he said.

Authorities transported Oehlerking back to Middle River Regional Jail in Verona after the hearing.

The News Virginian does not identify victims of sexual assault.
