Man in stable condition after being shot by police

The man shot by the Albemarle County Police Tactical Squad during the arrest of a suspect in the Interstate 64 shootings remains in stable condition, a police official said this evening.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was inside a Yonder Hill Farm Road residence when authorities entered the house around 5 a.m. today to make the arrest and conduct a search. Police have said the man was armed with a handgun and subsequently shot.

The man was taken by helicopter to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Hospital officials have been unwilling to discuss his condition or confirm his identity.

The comments from the police official, Col. Steven Flaherty of the Virginia State Police, represented the first update on the man's condition since this morning.

The man has not been charged.

Flaherty's comments came during a news conference at which he announced a host of charges against a 19-year-old Afton resident -- the person arrested by the tactical team -- and an unnamed juvenile in connection with the Interstate 64 shootings.

The 19-year-old, Slade A. Woodson, and the boy each face a total of 10 felony charges in connection with the interstate shootings.
