A player throws a ball during the dodgeball tournament at Waynesboro High School.
Tipped-over tables and tumbling mats marked the dodgeball arena boundaries Saturday as a team of mostly high school seniors stormed through the losers’ bracket to win the first Blitz Dodgeball tournament at Waynesboro High School.
“As soon as he let a ball go I’d throw at his feet,” said Zac Wells, talking strategy after delivering the game-winning throw of the tournament’s final round.
That round pitted Wells and “Team Ramrod” against “Fish Out of Water,” a squad of school swimmers led by coach Dan Bledsoe. Just two hours earlier, the swimmers had gotten the best of those seniors in the tournament’s first matchup. But a repeat was not to be.
Wells, along with seniors Emily Crowder, Jimmy Negrete, Taylor Sayre, Nick Vela and junior Chris Figgatt (a traitorous swimmer, Bledsoe says), split $125 in prize money.
In all, eight teams made up of students, teachers and parents signed up and paid their dues as part of the sophomore class fundraiser, organized by class sponsor and first-year world history teacher Josh Waldron.
“It’s hard to stand and ref, instead of play,” he said, recalling the college dodgeball tournament he enjoyed as a student and which inspired the high school tournament.
Other players were farther removed from their last game od dodgeball.
“When I was in second grade was probably the last time I played,” said parent and middle school math teacher Chris Eldredge, who got his daughter out during one round.
“She was devastated,” he said, laughing.
Players saw a bit of everything between the first and final tournament throws — one ball busted a speaker, some players used underhand deliveries and many chose dives and rolls as escape methods.
And many — even the seniors — said they’ll likely come back next year.
“If,” Negrete said, “they’ll let us.”

caponer must hate the world and his/her life.A very rediculous remark was made by this person about the killings at The Homestead too.Why can’t some people just get a life, and not hate everything and everybody?
Oh, and thanks for the compliment!—and I do agree too that about character. But then we are taking steps to philosophy and aesthetics, which I truly adore.

“Speed, accuracy, motion, traction, the raising of energy by the burning of fuel through ATP when the body taps into its reserves and pulls the dormant superpower of fat along its chains to keep with the the firepower of ATP, which raises the need for oxygen. And once the body maximizes this plateau, a person will collapse becuase it canot keep with with demand—how awesome that we are geared for so much potential—energy! To you, it may be mindless, with the body, it is work—and yet they are having fun!“
Zarxo, did you write this yourself? It is fantastic! I am in the middle of writing a diet and fitness book, and I might just have to quote you on this front. It’s much less stodgy than describing the function of ATP scientifically.
As to this statement: “ —back to the thought, I get more and more younger people flirting with me. Do you know why? Form and function—I am not round, pudgy or “soft.““
I imagine it has a lot to do with your attitude and outlook on life, as well as your physical form. You could have a Mr. America form, but a cold, smug and self-important attitude and the flirting wouldn’t go on for long. There has to be some substance under the form.
In reading Caponer’s recent postings, it appears that Scrooge is alive and no so well. Caponer, I believe you need to take a strong laxative and get outside in the fresh air and sunlight. Do some mindless activity for a change. Learn to smile again. After you have tried out the smiling for a while, dare to laugh out loud! Soon you might find yourself doing some random act of kindness completely beyond your control! It might feel scary for just a while, but I’m sure that somewhere way down in your up-tight soul is some human kindness and some joy.

In science, it is fact, that form follows function. Big round bellies presupposes a function—and I bet it is not dodge-ball. ![]()
I am 37 and in shape because in elementary school I was taught to run well and to compete—competition is another biological basis for Natural Selecton—put two microbes in one petri dish and you will soon discover how fast one microbe will out eat and isolate and destroy its partner. ![]()

Stand up striaght and pull in that tummy to raise that back to look forward and up while pointing your feet straightly and not sideward like a duck. You are a special species that not only thinks but “can tell that body” what it should do.“
Now, “play ball.“ ![]()
In regard to the comment made by “caponer”, I would like to say that, as one of the organizers of this event, my son and the other sophomore class officers learned a lot about planning a fundraising event for their community. It was a creative idea and put them ahead of the game in their fundraising efforts for their senior prom. Mr. Waldron is doing a wonderful job as the class advisor and got the kids really excited about this event. I would much rather see something like this than have my kids selling junk that people don’t need or want. My advice to “caponer” would be to read the article more carefully and ask some questions before you label something as a mindless activity.
Kids doing something physically active and competing - sounds much better than what they could be doing on a Saturday morning. Plus it served as a fundraiser - this is good with me. We need more ideas like this for the kids in Waynesboro.
We pay good money in support of something as mindless as dodgeball?
