Severe thunderstorm, flash flood watches continue for Augusta County area
6:05 p.m. UPDATE:: Augusta and Nelson counties are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m., and a flash flood watch until 11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The watches are also in effect through most of the Shenandoah Valley and many parts of Virginia.
Dominion Virginia Power says that 36,584 customers are without power statewide, with 3,113 of those in the Shenandoah Valley/Western Piedmont area. Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative says 129 of its 17,350 customers are without power as of 6:04 p.m.
5:45 p.m. UPDATE: About 300 customers, mostly on Dogwood Avenue in Waynesboro, are without power. Once the storm moves through, Dominion Virginia Power spokesperson Le-Ha Anderson said the company should have a better idea of whether any additional customers lost power. The power outage coincided with the hail storm that moved through the area.
“If this is all that we’re dealing with, we should have all these customers restored by 10 p.m. if not before,“ Anderson said.
5:34 p.m. UPDATE: Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative reports that 125 of its 17,350 Augusta County customers are without power.
5:30 p.m. UPDATE: The National Weather Service continues to have a severe thunderstorm warning for north-central Nelson County, southeastern Augusta County and in Waynesboro until 6 p.m.
At 5:02 p.m., the National Weather Service said the storm was located near Afton, moving southeast at 10 mph. Half-dollar sized hail and wind gusts up to 65 mph can be expected in the path of the storm.
Dominion Virginia Power indicates that 2,451 households have lost power in the Shenandoah Valley/Western Piedmont areas.
5 p.m. UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm warning, as well as a flash flood warning, is in effect for the entire Augusta County area.
The thunderstorm warning is in effect until 5:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The storm is capable of producing quarter-sized hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. At 4:38 p.m, National Weather Service Doppler radar continued to indicate a severe thunderstorm centered in the Crimora area, moving southeast at about 15 mph.
Other locations in the warning include Greenwood, Yancey Mills, Boonesville, Batesville, White Hall, Ivy, Free Union, Earlysville and Crozet.
