Multi-vehicle accident on I-81 in Shenandoah County

A large multi-vehicle crash in Shenandoah County on Interstate 81 is blocking southbound traffic at mile marker 275.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said 20 to 30 vehicles are involved in the crash. Both southbound lanes are closed on the stretch of interstate about an hour north of Staunton.

Motorists should expect significant delays in this area.

A detour has been set up taking travelers off of I-81 at exit 279 at Edinburg, traveling south on Route 11 and rejoining the interstate at exit 273 in Mount Jackson.

On I-81 at mile marker 281 northbound there is another crash involving about 10 vehicles. Both northbound lanes are closed.  Motorists will detour I-81 at exit 279 at Edinburg taking Route 11 north and rejoining I-81 at exit 283 in Woodstock.
