Man pleads to porn charges
A Staunton man has pleaded guilty in federal court to viewing child pornography on his laptop computer inside the Staunton Public Library.
Clifton Thomas Talley, 59, faces minimum prison sentences of 10 years each for two counts of possession of child pornography.
Police arrested Talley after an incident July 5 at the library in which a concerned patron reported seeing an image of a young girl on the man’s personal laptop computer.
Talley admitted during questioning to having nude pictures of males 13 and 35, according to court documents. During a search, police found more than 1,000 pornographic images on Talley’s computer. On a second search at his mother’s home, where he was living, police recovered a camera, CDs and a notebook with Web site names and e-mail addresses.
Talley has been convicted three times of federal child pornography charges, according to the Virginia State Police sex offender registry. Those convictions raise sentencing recommendations for Talley.
According to a 13-page plea agreement, Talley is also barred from contact with juveniles and will not be allowed to loiter within 1,000 feet of schools, malls and carnivals, and is barred from entering sex industry shops, such as strip clubs.
When the case moved to U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg, attorneys tussled over the legality of Talley’s arrest and subsequent searches. His defense attorney argued unsuccessfully that police lacked probable cause to arrest him.
Talley is being held at Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange and awaits an August sentencing hearing.

—barred from sex or strip shops? This is where this guys needs to be, around adults! Talk about law that needs to be redefined.
—obviously, this is a culture phenomena that is very intertwined into and with the biological processes.
Experts now say that even if one is intellgent, if they are not soicialized correctly to be “more human” than those parts of the brain are no longer active—the expressions, if you will, have been turned off. More than likely, those expressions are hormone related as well.
The same hormone initiated by a proper mother/child care giver and child, oxytocin is the same hormone that is released during positive adult social groupings—plus the same one release for straight men and women for sexual connections.
Culture is very important, but so is love, aka, biological nurture.
—and still that doesn’t preuppose that cases like this will never happen.
Again, my theory is this, if society were based more on open disclosure from small family groups to our community then the disparity between overt and covert cultures would not be so great.
