Man pleads guilty to role in hit-and-run accident

A Waynesboro man pleaded guilty Thursday to his part in a hit-and-run accident and, as part of a plea deal, was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation.

Robert Mathyas, 46, was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an Apr. 1 accident in the Village Market parking lot in Crimora. 

Augusta County Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Thomas Knoll Jr. said Mathyas was drunk at the time and nearly struck the driver of the other vehicle.

Judge Victor V. Ludwig said the guilty finding would be vacated if Mathyas does not violate the terms of his probation.

If he does, Mathyas could serve up to 10 years in prison. Ludwig said Mathyas was fortunate in getting such a plea bargain.

“You got a deal the likes of which I haven’t seen lately,” Ludwig said.
