Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama has officially chosen his running mate for the 2008 presidential election – Sen. Joseph Biden, of Delaware, a 36-year Washington insider. The announcement came early Saturday morning.
Local Democrats praise the decision, citing Biden’s extensive experience as a good balance for Obama’s newcomer status.
“I think it’s a splendid choice,” said Bob Dickerman, chairman of the Staunton Democratic Committee. “He is one of the most experienced people in the Senate. He has been an excellent chairman of the Judiciary Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee. He is highly regarded by those on both sides of the aisle, I think.”
Waynesboro Democratic Committee Chairman Chris Graham agreed.
“It’s very positive, actually, I think,” said Graham. “Joe Biden is a great choice for the Democrats. What it signals is that Barack Obama really does want someone who can challenge him sometimes – when necessary. He brings a great background in foreign policy and has had a long experience in the Senate.”
Tom Long, chairman of the Augusta County Democratic Committee, says that Biden has an uncanny ability.
“He is one of the most creative and kind of connect-the-dots kinds of thinker; [he] sees the big picture in foreign policy issues,” said Long.
In a statement released Saturday, Gov. Tim Kaine supported the decision, saying that he is “very excited that Senator Obama has selected Senator Biden to be his running mate” and that he is “a tremendous leader and great complement to Senator Obama and his candidacy.”
Many residents are geared up in the wake of the early Saturday announcement.
“I think it has really energized the Democrats,” said Graham. “We’ve been here at the headquarters all morning. People have been coming in and getting yard signs and those kinds of things and the response from people has been very positive. From the feedback we’re getting, [the nomination] is a hit.”
