Five injured in Deerfield accident
Five people were injured, at least two of them seriously, in a multi-vehicle accident near Deerfield Saturday afternoon, according to the Virginia State Police.
Trooper Timothy Simmons said a 1997 Toyota Tacoma driven by Sean Stanton, 33, of Monterey, was driving on Route 250 westbound Saturday around 2 p.m. when he came into a curve, ran off the right side of the road, and while overcorrecting his vehicle, collided into three motorcycles heading eastbound.
Doug Morris, fire chief of the Deerfield Valley Volunteer Fire Department, which along with Virginia State Police responded to the incident, said the accident took place about 1.5 miles beyond the intersection of Route 629 not far from Shenandoah Mountain near the Highland County-Augusta County line.
The lead motorcycle in the group had a male driver and a female passenger, and the two motorcycles following that one were driven by females, Simmons said.
“They all were injured and a couple of them had serious injuries,” Simmons said.
Two people were airlifed to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, two people were airlifted to Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, while another was taken by ambulance to AMC.
“It’s very rare for two helicopters to be called out for one accident,” Simmons said.
He said the helicopters used a nearby yard to land and transport the patients.
He said one of the people taken to AMC was later airlifted to U.Va. The driver of the pickup truck, Simmons said, suffered the least-serious injuries.
The motorcycle riders were part of a large contingent raising money for kids, Simmons said.
Stanton was charged with a second offense DUI, Simmons said.

I am feel so sorry for our fellow riders that got injured in this crazy accident. If that man would have gotten his head out of his BUTT and would have not drove drunk, our friends would have never got injured!!These people were out for a GREAT cause and was very inocent! I hope and PRAY that they will be okay. I love riding and everyone out there needs to be aware that they are people out there that love to ride a motorcycle and they need to look out for us and give us the respect that we deserve!! We have all rights to be on the road too! God Bless the family and friends of these 2 GREAT people!! ![]()
DRUNKS!!! When are steps going to be taken to get them and KEEP them off the roads? I used to love to ride but ofr the same reason, I gave it up! Prayers and well wishes to the injured and their families!
JAIL TIME is what he needs. I heard this guy has already lost his license. If that’s the case, a few years in jail might help sober him up. I, too, pray a speedy recovery to those who were injured and can get back to riding soon!
I hope all of the motocycle group has a fast recovery. They were out riding for a charity and were run over by an IDIOT!I hope he looses his drivers license forever and looses everything he owns and will ever own for beind drunk!
My prayers go out to the five riders and their families. Its a shame that us motorcycle riders cant enjoy our rides because its people like the guy who hit them that we never know if its gonna be our last. And for him to be driving drunk was stupid anyway. To all of you who dont ride, i hope this will make you think about us riders more. We love to ride so please share the road and take that extra second to make sure a motorcycle rider isnt coming before you pull out. And please look in your rear view mirror for us too. I hope and pray the riders who were hurt will be ok.
Praying for those injured and also praying that the judicial system will not allow Mr.Stanton to ever drive again!
We would like the familys of these victims to know our thoughts and prayers are with you. It is so sad when we get together to do good for the community and something like this happens. It makes you wonder how we could of prevented it from happening. All I can think of is drivers be aware of your surroundings and your driving abilities, know your limitations for all others you share the roads with. As a motorcycle rider we more alert to not only other cars and trucks, we must also check road conditions, small items on the road, animals. The list can go on. Please if you drink above all don’t get behind the wheel it’s not you right to endanger others. Most important it is the law.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those injured. The sad part is alcohol and poor judgement makes for innocent people getting hurt in this accident!
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. This is a sad and tragic accident that probably could have been prevented. PLEASE everyone who drives on the road be on the lookout for those who ride motorcycles. Please share the road.
There is a strong bond between all of us that ride the roads on motorcycles. Our fear of something like this happening is always in the back of our minds. However, we ride because we love to ride. My prayers go out to the five that were hurt yesterday.
