Cline’s beasts booted
Waynesboro’s most gargantuan visitors — a herd of five fiberglass elephants — come down today from their perch atop the city’s capped landfill, far too soon for some fans, but two months later then their initially scheduled departure.
Artist Mark Cline assembled the elephant display, titled, “Hannibal Crossing the Blue Ridge,” on April Fools’ Day, with an OK from city leaders, then pushed for them to stay.
A flurry of pro-pachyderm messages came to City Manager Mike Hamp, who mulled their permanent stay before deciding to boot the beasts, citing concerns from at least one resident living near the display.

I think that the City Council of Waynesboro needs to lighten up. The elephant display was not harming anyone, it provided some interesting conversation, and it was neat to look up and see when going up toward Afton Mtn. Mark Cline is an asset to our community. The ordinance to have it removed is evidence that City Council is not attending to more pressing issues, such as the empty storefronts downtown, the lack of a movie theater here in Waynesboro, the need for entertainment here, and other drawas for this city. Sure the front of the Wayne Theater is improved…but if no one is drawn downtown to see it what’s the point? With Target, Walmart, etc, it would seem that a movie theater and perhaps an updated electronic bowling alley or other entertainment would draw more out of town visitors as well as be an attraction for our citizens. I’m bored with what we have to offer right now.
