City backhoe strikes SUV
A Waynesboro public works backhoe driver caused an accident Wednesday morning, sending two people to the hospital.
At about 9:45 a.m., city employee Glen W. Towler, 46, of Stuarts Draft, drove a backhoe into a blue Chevrolet Blazer on Shenandoah Avenue near High Street, Waynesboro police said.
A parked dump truck partially obscured Towler’s vision as he turned from a driveway onto the road, police said. The Blazer driver could not avoid the tractor. The female driver, 41, and her passenger, 62, complained of pain and were taken to Augusta Health, police said.
Police charged Towler with failure to yield the right of way causing an accident. The backhoe suffered no damage, but the Blazer had “substantial” damage to the passenger side, police said.

I’ve seen many a near miss with city work crews not monitoring traffic when driving city work vehicles (dump trucks, back hoes etc).
Like the County and their former IT expert in neglect of personal property, an employer is responsible for the supervision of its employees—and the lack thereof raises liabilty—for neglect, especailly if an employee acts beyond his or her authority within their job description.
—I would have that backhoe worker drug tested—could release liability from “city to civil.“
