The Waynesboro High School Class of 1974 celebrated its 35-year reunion July 31 through Aug. 2.

More than 100 class members, spouses and guests gathered at Capt’n Sam’s Landing for a Friday evening of Caribbean-themed dining, conversation and music from the ’60s and ’70s provided by class member Mike Wagner. Class members came from as far away as Switzerland (Kevin Foley) and Alaska (Peter Naoroz). Other WHS classes were also represented that night.

Saturday morning, the second WHS Class of ’74 “Little Giants Golf Classic,” a captain’s choice golf tournament was held at the Waynesboro Country Club. Eight foursomes participated.

Lee Quillen, Randy Hite, Craig Hiserman and Mike Brancati comprised the winning team. Closest-to-the-pin honors went to Becky Pultz, of WHS class of 1973. Longest drive honors went to Scott Rogers, of class of 1975. All winners received prizes. Class member Phyllis Bare Poluito organized the event.
Saturday evening, a dinner and dance were held at the country club. The evening started with a King Photo class portrait, which were distributed to attendees the same evening. Before dinner, a candlelight prayer was offered by Kendall Layman in honor of the 16 class members who had passed away. A dinner buffet was served and 5 Star DJ Express with Rodney Olson provided the musical entertainment. Approximately 100 classmates and their guests attended.
On Sunday morning, a devotional was held at Ridgeview Park pavilion. Class member Kendall Layman and his Christian band started the service by playing several inspirational-type songs. The Rev. Linda Mitchell Motley delivered the message and Jeff Walter ended the event by singing a solo. Following the devotional, class members and guests met at Shoney’s for breakfast and final goodbyes.
The reunion committee was comprised of chairman Phyllis Bare Poluito, who led with hard work and tireless efforts; Charlie McCauley; Marsha Tooley Berg; Barbara Smith; Sherry Hash Holder; Kendall Layman; Kemper Hulvey; Debbie Trent Palmer; and Holly Barksdale Bennett. Peebles and Skyline Trophy were other local businesses that contributed their assistance with the reunion.

The WHS class of 1974 plans to continue holding major reunions every five years as well as informal get-togethers at other times. Class members may stay in touch by forwarding their own or others addresses, phone numbers and e-mail information to Phyllis at 943-6053.
