The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge is seeking nominations for its annual Dawbarn awards by Oct. 1. This year, 10 awards will be presented to recipients who will also receive nearly $6,000 in cash. Special Olympics will host a bake sale today at Kmart in Waynesboro. Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics. The sale will be held by a local Polar Plunge team.  There will be homemade bread, cakes, cookies, brownies etc.  Take a chance selling raffles on a Lisa Geiman print. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Staunton Community Theatre is seeking people to be involved, not only in acting, but also to design and build sets, for costumes, make-up and to help out on other aspects of a full theatre production. The SCT is also looking for board members to develop the concept of a viable theater group which would offer live theater in the future.
The Staunton Community Theatre’s FIRST production, “Anne of Green Gables” (directed by Suzanne Roberts) is planned for the spring. Suzanne Roberts will be directing and is seeking an assistant director. Anyone who would like to get involved is invited to attend the meeting. This will not be a sign-up for auditions, which will be scheduled for later date. Experience not necessary!

The Shenandoah Valley Chapter of USA Dance celebrates National Ballroom Dance Week from Sept. 18 to 27.  The week begins with demonstrations at the Simon Valley Mall today from noon to 2 p.m. A community dance will be held tonight from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Dayton Learning Center.  A free tango lesson at 7:15 p.m. will be included with admission to the dance. Dancing to ballroom, latin, swing and Argentine tango music in an alcohol- and smoke-free environment.

The Community Mediation Center is offering a workshop on Mediation and Conflict Resolution. The 20-hour training is certified by the Supreme Court of Virginia and will be held Monday through Wednesday in Harrisonburg. CEU credits are available for this course. Circle 8 Square Dance Club of Waynesboro is offering square dance lessons this fall from 7 to 9 pm. Tuesday evenings at Kate Collins School. Sept. 22 is free to give everyone a chance to experience square dancing. George Jordan, of Staunton, will be the caller and instructor and club members will be on hand to add support. November
The annual Woman’s Club Scholarship Ball to be held on Nov. 7 at the Elks Lodge from 8 to 12.  Tickets are $50 a couple and $25 single.  The Sentemental Journey (a 16 piece orchestra) will provide the music.  Any publicity we can get on this will help us sell tickets and raise money to support our scholarship program.  We give a $6000 scholarship over a four year period to a local senior from either Waynesboro, Stuarts Draft, or Wilson Memorial.
