Sweet days are coming

Those who live there always knew it was a sweet dream, life in Stuarts Draft. Now even outsiders have caught on, thanks to Stuarts Draft postmaster Kevin Blackford, who came up with the idea; the Augusta County Parks and Recreation Department; the area’s civic groups and the dozens of businesses that collaborate on the annual Sweet Dreams Day, now in its fourth year.

‘Living’ music

Gabby Haze, a local group, will have a benefit concert for PACE and their first CD release party at Prince Michel winery, 154 Winery Lane, Leon, approximately 35 minutes north of Charlottesville on Rt. 29, on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 6 to 9 p.m.  Admission will be $5. All proceeds from the concert and CD sales at this event will be donated to the Pat Magnone Scholarship fund of PACE center for girls offering education, counseling, training and advocacy.

An American tradition

There was a time when four Virginia men were on the short list with apple pie and baseball as icons of American nostalgia. The Statler Brothers - Harold and Don Reid, Phil Balsley and Lew DeWitt - sang about their Shenandoah Valley home with affection and gorgeous harmonies, and their musings about small-town tragedy, loneliness, friendship and heartbreak rang true for a reason. They had lived that life.

Home-cooked by Mama

Mama Bea’s Restaurant and Floyd’s Lounge, owned by Floyd W. Michael, 1300 Churchville Ave, Staunton, is a hot venue for local entertainment and good home-cooked food like chicken and dumplings, meat loaf, brown beans and ham, lasagna and homemade peach cobbler.

    The trains of summer

    The Gypsy Express at Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton has proved to be “the little engine that could” many times over during the course of a half-century. Thanks to its 60-some volunteers, the train is up and running again this season, the 50th birthday of the Gypsy Express, frequented by the children and grandchildren of those who first rode the mini-train during its early years.

    We live in an area where there are a lot of ticks. Recently I discovered one in the upper part of my son’s ear. I pulled it out but part of the tick remained. The doctor tried but may not have gotten it all out. What is the best way of getting a tick out, if and when he gets bitten again-

    The Waynesboro High School Jazz Ensemble is planning its seventh annual Spring Fling for Saturday, May 19, from 7-9 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

    Arts in the Park returns to Gypsy Hill

    The 41st Annual Art in the Park will be held on Memorial Day weekend, May 26-27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton. The show is free, and according to Beth Hodge, executive director of the Staunton Augusta Art Center, there will be something for everyone.
