WALDROP: Biblical perspectives on denial
WALDROP: Biblical perspectives on denial

The Bible makes it clear that our loss and grief experiences are important to God. Long before Jesus was born, the prophets predicted him to be “a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief” (Isa. 53:3); and, when he came, he taught that those who grieve their losses are on his “Most Fortunate People” list (Matt. 5:4). Moreover, he said that God notices the deaths of every lowly sparrow and that knowing this can heighten our confidence in God’s care of us in our grief. He even counts the hairs on our head (Matt. 10:29-30; Luke 12:6-7).

Making religion a good word again

People respond differently to the word “religion.” For some, it is a stuffy, super-serious suggestion that there is too much fun going on in the world and that we should put a stop to it. For others, it is a positive word that means church, family, faith, discipleship, the Bible and anything else pertaining to God. Others dislike it for much the same reason.
