HARRISONBURG — The Stuarts Draft Cougars were unable to defeat Harrisonburg in consecutive years as they lost 50-29.
The Blue Streaks were pumped up Friday night when they came out of the locker room. From the first snap they pounded the ball with running back Michael Holmes.
After a 14-yard run to start the game, Holmes took off for a 54-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game.
Harrisonburg botched the extra point attempt but Michael Atkinson picked it up and dove into the corner of the end-zone giving the Blue Streaks an 8-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Cougars responded to the touchdown with a Travis Shifflett 71-yard scamper up the middle. The two-point conversion run by Darius Woodson was no good.
With the score 8-6, the Streaks wasted no time responding to the Cougars’ touchdown. On third down Jake Johnson completed a pass to Scott Brevard and he was able to get past the Cougar secondary as he raced down the sideline for a 64-yard touchdown.
The Cougars put together a run to end the second quarter. Draft pushed their way up the field on six runs by Woodson.
After a Harrisonburg penalty the ball was set on the one-yard line. The Cougars gave the ball to Woodson and ran to the left side for the touchdown.
The Cougars were not going to settle with going into the half down a point. The Cougars defense stripped the ball from Zach Dean getting it back with just under a minute left.
Draft gave the ball to Shifflett who busted off a 37-yard run up the middle. On the next play D.J. Hines ran it in from five yards out giving the Cougars a 22-15 lead.
The Streaks added a late touchdown in the first half on a Holmes seven-yard touchdown run. The teams went into halftime tied 22-22.
The Blue Streaks opened the second half with a 64-yard touchdown run by Holmes. After an extra point by kick by Jesse LeMasters the streaks took the lead 29-22.
After the Cougars were unable to move the ball down the field, they were forced to punt to return man DeSean Taylor who took the kick 56-yards for the touchdown.
With 3:39 left in the third quarter Holmes raced down the sideline for a 65-yard touchdown scamper. That touchdown gave him his fourth of the night, giving the Streaks a 43-22 lead.
In the fourth quarter the Streaks kept putting up points. With the ball on the one–yard line Holmes got the carry and ran it straight up the middle for the touchdown.
Late in the fourth the Cougars put in some of their second-teams players and were able to put on a late drive on key runs from Coy Wimer and Jeff Ramsey that led to a Dillon Campbell touchdown.
“Bowers always has his kids ready to play,” said Harrisonburg coach Tim Sarver. “I think the story of this game was the first half both teams executed plays.”
The Streaks were lead by Michael Holmes who on 18 carries had 274 yards and five touchdowns.
Draft Coach Rod Bowers was proud of how his team fought tonight. “I am proud of our kids and I wouldn’t trade them for any other kids,” Said Bowers.
“They played hard and I’m proud of them.”
