Lipscomb nominated for award
Waynesboro High School’s Jacob Lipscomb was nominated for the Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year for his accomplishments as defensive tackle for the Little Giants and for his contributions in the community. If selected, Lipscomb would be featured in USA Today in February.
There was no hesitation, according to his football coach, Steve Isaacs, who dropped the seniors’ name into the voting pot.
“I wish I had more kids like Jacob,” Isaacs said. “He has worked hard and works himself into a position like this because of his volunteer work at Waynesboro police department and the way he leads on the field. He’s a good kid.”
Lipscomb didn’t expect the kind words or a nomination. He did expect that he would meet his two goals: get a solid education and play football at the collegiate level. The latter might be granted next month as Lipscomb has drawn interest from West Virginia Wesleyan College, a NCAA Division II school in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Lipscomb hopes to make it official next month when he meets Dennis Creehan, the Bobcats’ new football coach.
“When I was sophomore I set goals that I was going to get a scholarship and play football,” Lipscomb said. “I can’t believe it, now that it’s happening.”
Lipscomb developed in to a 6-foot, 1-inch, 265-pound lineman.
“I was small when I started to play football. I just started to fill out,” Lipscomb said.
Now, he’s looking at a college career that includes a partial scholarship.
“This was such a blessing,” Lipscomb said. “I didn’t think I would be offered a scholarship. This really takes the burden off my parents.”
Lipscomb’s character was evident during the season. It didn’t matter if it was between shifts, Lipcomb’s voice boomed from the sidelines to cheer on his teammates. But he won’t forget his roots.
“It has been a really good experience for me playing football here,” Lipscomb said.
In his off time aside from holding a part-job, volunteering and keeping his grades up, Lipscomb will do a little fishing if he attends West Virginia Wesleyan College in the fall. Just another hobby he enjoys to do.
“I just love the campus, I can wake up and see the river from the dorm and I can fish there,” Lipscomb said.
Lipscomb already sounds all grown up.
“But I’ll have to clean the fish, my mom won’t have to now.”
During his time with the Giants, Lipscomb competed in outdoor track, indoor track, baseball, wrestling, competitive cheerleading and cross country.
