STAUNTON - Robert E. Lee put on an offensive show Friday, defeating Harrisonburg 56-32. The Leemen were led by senior quarterback Dae’ Quan Scott, who ran for 278 yards on 20 carries with five rushing touchdowns and one passing.
The first quarter started off with a bang for the Leemen who drove down the field on two runs from Mark Anderson, which led to a Scott 47-yard TD run.
Harrisonburg came out running the ball with its star back, Alex Owah. The Streaks were unable to get into the end zone, but a 21-yard field goal by Jesse LeMasters put the Blue Streaks on the board.
It didn’t take long for the Leemen to respond to Harrisonburg.
Scott took a quarterback sneak 45 yards for the touchdown, putting the Leemen up 14-3.
The Blue Streaks’ next possession put them in a big hole. On first-and-10, Owah fumbled the ball on the 24 yard line and Leeman Malcolm Kier scooped it up and ran it in for the touchdown.
Harrisonburg was able recuperate and scored on the next drive with a 44-yard pass from Jake Johnson to Michael Atkinson.
In the second the Leemen kept adding touchdowns. Scott ran for a 6-yard score and Anderson blew past the Streaks’ secondary for a 49-yard touchdown run. Lee went into the half up 35-12.
In the second half the Streaks’ Clint Conner received the opening kickoff and took it 87 yards to the house. The Streaks were unable to keep the intensity after Owah went down with a game-ending foot injury.
The Leemen responded with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Re’ al Wilmott from Scott. Lee went into the fourth quarter with a sizeable 42-20 lead.
In the fourth, Harrisonburg was able to muster two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Leemen.
Scott went into the fourth quarter with 200 rushing yards and added 78 more on just two carries, both touchdown runs.
“I thought our kids played well, but we got to cut down on the penalties,” said Lee Coach David Tibbs.
The Blue Streak coaches were impressed with Scott’s performance as each one of them shook his hand after the game.
“I don’t understand why U.Va. isn’t out here looking at [Scott],” Tibbs said.
Scott gave the credit to his teammates and especially his offensive line.
“They made holes and I ran through them,” he said. “This is still a rivalry between us and Harrisonburg and I am happy we won.”
Lee is 4-0 and will travel to Broadway next Friday.
