Bees push around Leemen

LYNCHBURG — Robert E. Lee was never able to get anything going offensively and was pushed around by the Brookville offense as the Leemen fell 40-14.

The Leemen were sluggish from the opening whistle and were never able to recover.

Lee took the opening drive and pushed their way down the field on several runs by Dae’ Quan Scott. A penalty by the Leemen pushed them back. Dustin Burdick’s field goal attempt came up short.

Brookville handed the ball to Stacey Houston early and often as he rumbled his way down the field. A Logan Thomas touchdown run put the Bees up 7-0 early.

Offensively the Leemen were unable to move the ball in the first half as the Bees defense held Scott in check.

Brookville put up another touchdown late in the first half to give them the 14-0 lead at the half.

Penalties killed the Leemen in the first half as they had six penalties including a personal foul that killed a momentous drive.

Lee coach David Tibbs was frustrated with some of the penalties that were called against his football team. “I am still trying to figure out where the penalties came from. Those penalties killed,” said Tibbs.

“We had three or four chances to score there in the first half and the penalties just killed us. I thought we should have had 14 points ourselves.”

On Brookville’s first play of the second half Houston busted off a 75-yard touchdown run to start the second half putting a damper on the Leemen hopes. Houston scored three times in the second half to push Brookville into an insurmountable lead.

The Leemen finally got on the board as Scott found a wide open Terrell Mickens across the middle for a 45-yard TD reception but the touchdown came a little too late for the Leemen.

Lee added another late touchdown in the fourth on a 1-yard run from Kevin Davis. The touchdown would be the last one scored by either team as the Bees took home the victory.

“Our guys played with heavy hearts tonight and we got beat by a better football team. The better team won tonight but I couldn’t be prouder of this team,” said Tibbs.

The Leemen ended the year with a 10-2 record overall in which Tibbs called a successful season.

“I can’t say enough about how the seniors played this year. I wished they could have won this ball game and kept playing,” Tibbs said.
