In Buena Vista, the Riverheads boys basketball team almost gave Parry McCluer a surprise victory Tuesday night in its season opener, but stopped the Blues from making a game-winning shot at the buzzer to win 43-42.

Lyndon Humphries led the Gladiators with a double-double, scoring 20 points and bringing in 13 rebounds. Demetrius Younger added seven points.

Riverheads (1-0, 0-0 Shenandoah) will be back in action on Saturday against Glenvar.

Boys

*Spotswood 67, Stuarts Draft 61

In Penn Laird, the Trailblazers eked by the Cougars on Tuesday night in their season opener.

Carlos Romero led the Blazers with 18 points. Coty Randolph put up 19 points for the Cougars with teammate Jordan Thacker pitching in 18.

Stuarts Draft (0-1, 0-0 Southern Valley) will play at Harrisonburg on Friday.


* Buffalo Gap 88, Covington 41
In Covington, Buffalo Gap boys basketball team defeated Covington 88-41 on the road Monday for its first win of the season. Senior and post player Boone Jones led the Bison with 23 points, six rebounds and six steals. Gap (1-0, 0-0 Shenandoah District) will be on the road against Parry McCluer for another non-district game tonight at 7 p.m.

Girls

*Albemarle 47, Western Albemarle 37

In Albemarle, the Warriors couldn’t find a rhythm against their cross-county rivals Tuesday night with only Caitlin Boles scoring double digits.

Boles led all Warrior scorers with 10 points.

Western (0-1, 0-0 Jefferson) will be back in action on Thursday in a tip-off tournament against Heritage at 8 p.m.
