BRIDGEWATER — All though Buffalo Gap stormed out to a 4-0 lead, the Bison couldn’t hold on as Luray won the Shenandoah District tournament playoff game 6-5 Friday night.
The exciting loss sent Buffalo Gap into Monday’s tournament semifinals against Wilson Memorial. The game will be held at Harrisonburg High School at 7 p.m.
A walk to the Bison’s Ryan Sheridan got the Gap rally started in the top of the second. With one out, back-to-back doubles by Austin Bowers and J.R. Hart brought in two runs. The Bison scored twice more courtesy of a pair of infield errors by the Bulldogs.
Luray rallied back in the bottom of the third scoring five runs. Lucas Dickson drew a lead off walk and Johnny Van Wyck followed with an infield single. Jeremy Leake knocked a RBI single followed by a base on balls by Billy Foley. Two Bison errors and a fielders choice allowed three more runs to score.
The Bison tied the game in the fourth on a double by Daniel Pitsenbarger, a hit batsman and a wild pitch.
The Gap (16-4) loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but Leake got out of the jam forcing the lead run out at home.
The Bulldogs (20-1) tallied the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a Van Wyck’s triple. The fleet footed Luray centerfielder scored on a close play at the plate on Leake’s grounder to third.
“I went on my own,” Van Wyck said. “You don’t have a chance like that very often, and I had to score that run.”
