SACCO: Spitzer deserved so much more

That Fort Defiance Principal Larry Landes only said “no comment” speaks volumes about how little this school administration values years of service, years of dedication and years of headaches.

Because longtime Indians football coach Dale Spitzer deserved so much more than this slap in the face.

Heck, he earned a Spitzer Night sometime next season with a brass band playing and fireworks exploding in the air.

OK, so maybe with our current economic climate, hiring the London Philharmonic and dumping dollars into exploding balls might not make the most fiscal sense. But, respect wise, saying goodbye Tuesday after 25 years to your head coach with a “no comment” proves the Fort Defiance administration is bankrupt when it comes to class.

We’ll probably never know what happened. When asked if Spitzer resigned, Landes repeated his fall-back refrain: “no comment.” Spitzer on the other hand, said there’s no piece of paper out there with his signature on it that says “resignation.” Right now, none of this matters.

Nor does it matter what happened to bring this about. Nor should we care. We shouldn’t care if names were called, paperweights were thrown or someone’s mother and her love of wearing combat boots was brought up in Landes’ Cerberus-guarded office.

The only thing that matters is, after a quarter of a century of coaching at the school he graduated from, Spitzer deserved so much more than “no comment.”

Hey, King Larry, how about, “Thank you.” How about a news release with a statement thanking Spitzer for all he’s done and wishing him well in the future?

How about checking your ego and arrogance at the door? The same ego and arrogance you showed off to the parents of your school back in June when you waved your magic scepter around and declared that Fort Defiance “is not a democracy,” when you broke a wrestling team’s heart and sent Terry Waters, your wrestling coach of 14 years, out the door.

Much like Waters, at the very least Spitzer deserved a thank-you. Much like that wrestling team, we have to ask: Were the football players’ feelings taken into account?

Thanks for that run in 2002, when Spitzer brought the Indians to within a sniff of the Group AA, Division 3 title game.

Thanks for that huge upset win in 2003, when a defense coined “The Vultures” stopped a 10-0 Western Albemarle team on its home field in the shadow of Afton Mountain, holding star running back Bryan Lescanec to 57 yards in that victory.

Or how about a thanks for dealing with a group of fans that should be an embarrassment for all of Augusta County? The same group of fans that caused the Indians to suspend Spitzer for a game when, after listening to them harangue his players during a home game — a freaking home game! — the coach finally turned and told them, in so many words, to shut the heck up.

How about a thanks for having to deal with these mouth-breathing bleacher bums who this season hid behind Internet aliases and chastised Spitzer because their Little Johnny Snowflake wasn’t playing?

Or, how about, a simple thanks for donating 25 years of your life to the youth of Fort Defiance?

But, if there’s one thing we’ve learned from Fort Defiance as of late, it’s when King Larry waves his scepter, that seems to end the story.

Sad part is, Spitzer’s final chapter deserved a much better ending. It should have ended with a thanks. A quarter century of service deserves so much more than “no comment.”

Oh and I can’t believe he’s still using that pride gimmick, it’s like a bad tv movie. Isn’t pride one of the 7 deadly sins? =)

Landes was my principal at another Augusta county high school. His students hated him- so much that they asked the old principal to speak at graduation, even though he tried to make us pick somebody else.  All the teachers i have spoken too personally about had a very low opinion of the man and his holier than thou attitude. He even started a program for student narcs to keep up with what the other students did on the weekend, empowering Landes kick certain “undesirable” students off sports teams all the while turning a blind eye to others, usually based on their parents tax bracket. Anyone that thinks this man is a good administrator hasn’t been a student or teacher in his “administration”.

My apologies to you Mr. Sacco for mistating your position at the News Virginian (perhaps you should take that as a compliment) and for not clearly stating that my recent post was a reaction to all your articles on this subject not just the one to which it was attached.  I did not misunderstand your concern over the lack of appreciation for Coach Spitzer’s service, and I will admit that it should have been expressed regardless of the reason’s for his dismissal. However, that again is not the usual way in which things are handled by the administration and once again neither you nor I know what has really taken place in this situation.
By the way, school administrator’s are legally bound to keep personnel issues private, so even if he wanted to release details Mr Landes could not and would not.  And as far as the Fort fans…I attend many sports events, football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, track and field and I have been a varsity coach myself in another school division.  I certainly don’t condone any inappropriate unsportsmanlike behavior. I have seen and experienced it personally at almost every school in the area.  That issue is universal and I would agree is a sad situation in every case.  But it’s not fair to label Fort as if it’s the only school with the problem.  By the way the football situation you pointed out in one article when the coach was suspended for a game… it involved one parent who was escorted out of the game and not allowed to attend games for the rest of the season. That’s the fact, but not the way it is portrayed in your article.  You have every right to express your opinion as I have mine, but my concern is that everyone in the media be careful and fair.  I trust the administration, the school superintendent and the school board members who I am confident knew about this decision.  They are people of integrity.  I may not always understand the decisions they make but I do believe they are making them in the best interest of the students.  So when you ask what if there are not any legitmate reasons, I just don’t believe that to be the case. You see Mr. Landes in the light of this situation, but I see him as a parent, a patron and a fellow educator.  He is loved by students. He knows them all by name. The overall picture of the school is one in which enthusiasm and school pride is thriving more than it has for many, many years. So no, I didn’t miss the point, but I do think that just as you feel the administration should have expressed gratitude to the coach, the media could have taken a more guarded approach to the situation as well. I think the Fort community is getting a harsh and unfair judgement.

My comment has nothing to do with Coach Spitzer , he deserves respect and appreciation.  You sports editors who sit in your ivory towers and make yourselves judge and jury and convict Larry Landes without knowing all the details make me absolutely sick.  You slam the Fort community with gross generalities and do more damage to the school and it’s students with your inflammatory rhetoric than any action taken by the administration.  Suppose there are legitimate reasons for any coaches dismissal and suppose they are trying to protect the coaches privacy by saying no comment?  Would you prefer that the school system make public every reason regardless of the consequences?  Just suppose you people who assume you know exactly what’s going on in this situation are wrong?  Suppose there are legitimate reasons you will never know?  Suppose previous administrations at Fort failed to establish strict athletic guidelines and standards and now an administration with more character and integrity than you will ever appreciate is trying to make changes that many see as hopeful, not despairing.
Larry Landes is a gentleman of great character who has transformed Fort Defiance in two years to a school where the students and community are participating in more events, feeling more pride and striving to a higher level of character and performance than ever before.  Your oomments are totally out of line and any readers who take them as truth when none of us know the details and reasoning behind the decisions that were made are making a grave misjudgement.

As a Waynesboro resident with no ties to or particular interest in Fort Defiance, the utter lack of respect and class exhibited by Fort Defiance High School administration is reprehensible, shameful and wrong.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!            Your right Mr. Sacco thank you . I thank you for your article.  Someone in a place where talking and words get heard. You stood up and used them accordingly. That was what was missing from all of this was a heartfelt thank you. To all of the supporters of Dale and his staff we know he deserves this. He deserves the football field, the weight room the CLASSROOM named after him.  His Staff that has been by his side late fridays after games and the weekends studying tape deserve it. What they don’t deserve are the blind sided slaps they have gotten the past few years.  You annonymous bloggers,  whinning parents and county employees shame on you for feeling you know better and probably think you could coach better. Nobody Thanks You for that you have tarnished yourself and tarinshed the effort these COACHES put forth. THANK YOU gentlemen for your effort and let it be known You changed my life. THANK YOU David Vandevander
