Old issues continue to nag

I was impressed by the Wednesday photo of Kevin Blackburn holding a battle flag carried all those years ago at New Market (“Battle for Waynesboro,” March 4). Family histories go a long way back around here and so do the controversies surrounding them.

Jefferson Davis offered an opinion about the South’s defeat, saying, “The issues we contended for will be heard from again.”

He was right. Short of slavery, some of those issues still are grist for our political mill even today.

Too bad they weren’t wise enough to let go of the slavery issue. If the confederacy was actually motivated by nobler matters, like modern revisionists claim they were, then their “lost cause” might not have met such a crushing defeat.
