Weekend thieves slip items from 10 scattered vehicles

Thieves stole music players, GPS units and cash from 10 vehicles scattered across Waynesboro during the weekend, continuing a trend of break-ins this month.

Waynesboro police said some of the thefts are clearly linked, such as three that happened at an apartment complex, but have little to connect others. In most cases, cars were unlocked, and no sign of forced entry was found.

Yet some victims reported their vehicles were locked, possibly indicating a more skilled criminal, said Waynesboro police Sgt. Kelly Walker.

The first report, for missing cash and credit cards, came Friday morning from the 1200 block of Brookwood Court. An mp3 player and GPS unit were also reported missing from Shawnee Road, about a mile away.

On Saturday, victims reported a theft at Guilford Lane and three about a mile away, on the 1600 block of Park Road.

On Sunday, victims reported another theft on Park Road, one nearby on Ohio Street and one across town on Highland Avenue.

Finally, Monday morning, an mp3 player was reported missing from the 200 block of Bookerdale Road.

Thefts total 15 since June 1, Walker said.

He advised people to lock their vehicles, and as importantly, remove valuables from sight.

“If it’s just an iPod laying in the console, take it out,” he said.
