Greenville man wins with lottery ticket
It was a routine fuel stop for Walter Everiss, of Greenville, when he went to fill up at the Stop In Food Store in Staunton.
But when Everiss, who works as an interpreter for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, went in to buy a Virginia Lottery scratch-off ticket, it became anything but routine.
Playing the lottery’s High Roller Scratcher game, Everiss bought his ticket, took it back to his car to scratch it, and found himself the winner of the $250,000 top prize, beating the 1 in 734,400 odds.
“I just couldn’t believe it,” Everiss told lottery officials in a release. “I took it home and looked at it 10 times.”
Everiss is the third, and final, player to win the game’s top prize. Lottery policy is to close the game after the final top prize is claimed. The game began in December 2008.
The Staunton convenience store, located at 3515 Lee Jackson Highway, receives a $750 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Each ticket had four separate games with players able to win up to 15 times.
Everiss claimed his top prize on Monday.
After accounting for 25 percent in federal taxes and 4 percent in state taxes, Everiss will receive $175,000.

I think the Waynesboro paper does a lot better job than the Newsleader in Staunton. There are things reported here about Staunton that the Newsleader never has!
Regarding the comment by SkylineMom:
They are going about it in an awkward kind of way, but the News Virginian is a business and they have to make money. If they don’t find a way to make money off of their web presence, then the newspaper itself will be at risk.
More and more newspapers are charging money for their online content. Now that the NV has a full online version, expect the free content to become limited, if not eliminated.
Are you willing to work without a paycheck?
what kind of crap is this? A teaser in the paper? I think this is pretty low.
