Area chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will present the annual Confederate Memorial Service at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton on May 24 at 2:30 p.m. The program will feature an address by Scott H. Harris, director of the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, titled Remembrance and Reconciliation. Events include memorial music performed by bagpiper Kathy Hawkins; fife and drum renditions of Confederate music performed by Dylan Sheffer and Hunter Desper; and “Taps” played by Billy Brooks. Appearances will be made by the Confederate regiments — the Fifth Virginia Infantry, West Augusta Guard and the Staunton Artillery. Displays of artifacts collected from Valley battle sites will be on-hand for viewing. There will be refreshments available. Admission is free. For more information, call 886-6456.

Terry Argenbright with Valley Sports Park will hold a public information meeting at Riverheads High School auditorium Friday at 7-8:30 p.m. to provide details and information about what it is hoped the Valley Sports Park will bring to Augusta County. Information on a sports training facility, family recreational areas, action sports, economic growth, after-school programs, job opportunities and involvement in helping to correct current traffic issues will be provided and discussed. Waynesboro Department of Public Works will host a tour of its state-of-the-art Water Treatment Plant for Public Works Day ‘09, hoping to teach the public about micro-filtration technology. The departments will have hands-on activities, exhibits and displays that celebrate this year’s theme of Public Works: Guardians of Our Community’s Natural Resources. Ideas on resource sustainability, water quality, work experience, consumption reduction and conservation education will be shared with visitors.

Buddy Ball baseball league for youth with disabilities is plays at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday evening during May at William Perry Elementary School ballfield. A cheering section is welcomed.

The Serenity Al-Anon Family Group will meet Tuesday, May 12, (and every Tuesday) at 1 p.m., at the Augusta County Library. Al-Anon is a support program for families and friends of alcoholics.

The Gen. Daniel Morgan Chapter of the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, will meet at Mossy Creek Restaurant, Fishersville on May 20 at 6 p.m. Guest speaker Wayne Grant will speak on The Constitution. The American Legion Post 340 Pancake Breakfast to be held today from 7:30-9 a.m. at 13 Eastside Highway, Waynesboro, has been canceled.

World Heritage Student Exchange is seeking local families interested in sharing their home to provide a high school exchange student a positive encounter with the United States. Valley Women’s Connection of Greater Staunton Area will hold its Charming Creations Luncheon on June 10 at 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. at Mrs. Rowe’s Country Buffet, Mt. Crawford. Nancy Williams from New Bremen, Ohio, will present a show and tell about jewelry and purses she creates, with some available to enjoy and/or purchase. Williams will also share vignettes of her colorful life story and talk about pricelessness of humans. Cost of lunch and program is $14 inclusive. Reservations required by June 5. Ten Speed Press announces the July release of “Mrs. Rowe’s Little Book of Southern Pies,” by Mollie Cox Bryan and Mrs. Rowe’s Restaurant and Bakery. The book is a collection of more than 65 of Rowe’s pie recipes. Bryan lives in Waynesboro with her family.
