FORT DEFIANCE — The Fort Defiance Indians forced Western Albemarle to five games on Thursday but fell in five games in non-district action.
“We knew Western Albemarle was as good as we’re going to see and we played right with them,” Fort Defiance coach Sue Leonard said.
The Indians battled back after a 25-21 loss in the first game with sophomore Megan Good stepping up to command kills and lead Fort to a close 25-23 win in the second game.
Good nailed 26 kills on the night and added 14 digs and four blocks.
“Megan had an outstanding game tonight,” Leonard said.
Good’s kills were matched by Warriors senior Katie Rossberg who dominated at the net for Western Albemarle and nailed the final kill for the fourth game Warrior win.
Fort came out early in Game 3 with a pair of aces by Elsie Martin, two of her five on the night. Martin also added 25 assists in the setter position. Carli Hill added 12 assists.
The Indians edged ahead in Game 3, gaining service break repeatedly to claim the 25-17 win on a dink by Emma Smith.
The Warriors edged past Fort in Game 4 with the two battling back and forth for the lead. Finally Western’s Laura Bergin nailed a dink to tie and push forward and eventually to the 26-24 win.
“I am really proud of them [Fort]. Playing a team of this caliber really will help us in the district,” Leonard said.
Game 5 belonged to the Warriors, taking the lead with repeated kills by Rossberg who nailed the final kill for the 15-10 win.
The Indians will host Stuarts Draft on Tuesday.
