The Waynesboro girls could not overcome ice-cold shooting and a horde of first-half turnovers against Broadway on Tuesday night, falling by a final of 56-20.
Heather Cantrell led the Gobblers with 11 points, and Brianna Zook and Heather Bagwell just missed double figures for Broadway with nine points. Waynesboro was led by seven points from freshman Brie Moore.
“Our mentality and our mantra all year long has been that we’re fighters. Tonight was a very physical game and we fell behind big but our girls never gave up. They have great heart,” Waynesboro coach James Eavey said after the game.
Broadway pressed the Giants throughout the first quarter, creating plenty of easy scoring opportunities as they blitzed out to a 16-0 lead. Two late baskets in the quarter from Waynesboro freshman Tajah Miller made the score 19-4 in favor of the Gobblers after one.
After Moore opened the second quarter with a basket to cut the deficit to 19-6, Broadway went on another dominant run. The Gobblers scored the last 17 points of the quarter to extend their lead to 36-6 at the half.
A basket by Broadway’s Kaylin Richardson with 4:18 left in the third gave Broadway their biggest lead of the night at 46-6. Waynesboro finished the quarter on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 47-12.
The teams played even down the stretch, as the Gobblers cruised to the 56-20 final.
“We’re almost always undersized but our girls are very scrappy and we continue to look for positives to take away from every game. We’ve been working on the trap the last few practices and I saw some real improvement tonight,” Eavey added.
A bright spot for Waynesboro were the first career points for senior Daniela Hinojos, who made a short baseline jumper in the fourth and finished with three points.
“Our whole team was cheering for Daniela to get that basket. You could really see how tight knit this group is after she made it,” Eavey said.
