The Waynesboro Little Giants struggled through icy first-half shooting and a slew of turnovers in their 45-26 loss to Valley District rival Spotswood Tuesday night.
Spotswood junior Bailey Williams’ 17 points led the Blazers, who moved to 15-5 overall and 8-3 in district play with the win.
“We knew we had a tough matchup coming in, but our girls played hard tonight,” Waynesboro coach James Eavey said. “Our defense was there and we continued to frustrate them all night long. Our posts were battling, our guards were battling – it was an all-around good effort.”
Spotswood jumped out to an early lead as Waynesboro’s offense struggled mightily to find its rhythm. Williams scored six of her 17 in the first quarter to help the Blazers out to a 13-0 lead.
Waynesboro finally managed to get on the board at the 4:20 mark of the second quarter on a Keishla Garcia free throw to make the score 17-1. Four more points in the quarter from freshman Brie Moore made the score 21-5 in favor of Spotswood at the half.
The Little Giants trailed by 20 at 33-13 with 3:50 left in the third, but closed the period on a 7-2 run to cut it to 35-20 after three.
Spotswood thwarted any chance of a comeback attempt with a 10-0 run to open the fourth. Waynesboro closed the game on a 6-0 run to reach the 45-26 final.
“I really think our team has finally turned a corner and our girls are starting to buy into what we have been preaching to them,” Eavey added. “Our defense has been there all year, but now if we can start making some shots then we can be a dangerous team in this district.”
Waynesboro will close its regular season at home versus Harrisonburg on Friday.
