Hat tricks off to the Farrington brothers.
Waynesboro’s Alex and Matthew Farrington lit up the scoreboard Tuesday night against Brookville in Region III quarterfinal play with each contributing three goals to the Little Giants’ 9-0 win over the Bees.
The pair were able to anticipate each other’s positions on the field and understood the united game plan.
“We just know each other well,” Matthew Farrington said. “We know what each other are going to do.”
In the first half of the match, Waynesboro jumped on Brookville early, scoring a goal in the first three minutes behind Alex Farrington. Senior Sawyer Janes contributed another goal minutes later to give the Little Giants a 2-0 advantage.
“Everything we did tonight worked for us,” Meicke said. “The guys were very motivated. We have never won this game on this day, so that was something I challenged them to do.”
As Waynesboro enjoyed control of the ball for the majority the game, Brookville’s defense experienced quite the workout. Throughout the night, Waynesboro consistently produced strong, offensive attacks to hold the Bees scoreless. Janes assisted another Alex Farrington goal that was quickly followed by Matthew Farrington’s first goal of the night after a steal from the keeper.
“When Matt started playing on the team, he really elevated his brother’s game,” Waynesboro coach Bill Meicke said. “They were determined today to show the kind of players that they are, and tonight we showed that we are a pretty good team.”
After a couple shots by the Bees, the Little Giants continued to the goal. Alex assisted his brother with a cross to give Matthew the goal, advancing Waynesboro to a 5-0 lead.
“Those goals were beautiful,” Meicke said. “My midfield played outstanding as well. Our game plan worked perfectly. We did not know anything about these guys, and I am glad we did not because we just decided to go for it, and we really did.”
Later in the half, senior Orlando Marin headed in a goal off of Alex Farrington’s cross on the back post. Shortly after, Marin took a corner kick that was flicked by a Waynesboro player and Matthew Farrington finished it off to achieve his third and final goal of the night.
Sparked by his brother’s hat trick, Alex Farrington was close behind to accomplish his own. As the Little Giants came out for the second half, Alex took a shot to score a goal and give Waynesboro another marker.
“We both had hat tricks,” Alex Farrington said. “He had the third one so I had to get another one to keep up. “
Finishing up the half, junior KJ Washington capped Waynesboro’s 9-0 win with a goal.
Meicke says his team will need to prepare and play like they did tonight in their semifinal match at EC Glass on Thursday. But for now – he is enjoying the sweet taste of victory.
“We did not know what team was going to show up today – our good team or our so-so team,” Meicke said. “I am very proud. I am very proud of the guys all the way around.”
Waynesboro will play Turner Ashby in the semifinals.
