FORT DEFIANCE – After a tight first half, Fort Defiance broke away to take a 7-2 win over Amherst County on Monday in the first round the Region III tournament.
Both teams started off playing a physical and fast paced game, but the Indians knocked in an early goal from Matt Barnes just eight minutes in giving them the advantage.
The Lancers made a comeback six minutes later with a header from Andrew Morcom knotting the game 1-1.
After the rough and tumble first half, the Indians came out of the break confident and scored another early goal with Johannes Kaupp assisting Alec Thibodeaux, who headed in the Indians’ second goal.
Less than two minutes later, the Indians were knocking in another goal, this one a penalty kick inside the 16-yard box from Kaupp, who sent a rocket past the Lancer goalkeeper. With a 3-1 lead, the Indians,never slowed down. Kaupp sent in another goal two minutes following his first on a shot from the middle, giving the Indians a 4-1 lead.
Adam Powell gave Fort a 5-1 lead seconds later on a free kick just outside of the box.
Though the Indians continued to storm the field, the Lancers refused to drop their defenses. Matt Payne sent in the Lancers’ second and final goal, showing the Amherst County spirit.
Not to be outdone, Kaupp upped the Indians lead even more with his third goal of the night, a hat trick for the German exchange student.
Chris Anhold followed shortly after Kaupp with a solo drive up the middle, past the goalkeeper, and straight back into the net without hesitation for the Indians’ last goal.
