STAUNTON — Ironwood Country Club played host to the Augusta County Shootout on Monday afternoon, and for the second straight year the Waynesboro Little Giants brought home the championship trophy.
Waynesboro sophomore Josh Kanney fired an even-par 36 to take low-medalist honors and lead a balanced Little Giants squad that posted a 168 to win the event that is in its twelfth year.
Brennan Lloyd posted a 40, while Ben Teachy and Mike Roberts each shot a 46 to help Coach Charlie Cox’s squad defend its title.
“What I loved about today was that even though we didn’t have our best day, no one let it get to them, we just kept playing,” Cox said. “The hardest thing is to try and shake something off of you and move on and we did that today. It is real nice to be able to win on a day that we didn’t have our best stuff. That makes me real proud.”
Kanney was a prime example of pushing through a rough start. He put up a double-bogey on his third hole, only to come back with three birdies over the last six holes to scrap back to even par and lead his team to the victory.
“It’s great to win this tournament again and we put up four solid scores to do it,” Kanney said. “I’m pretty satisfied with the way I played today and I just hope that we can build on this for the rest of the year.”
Fort Defiance, anchored by Jordan Montgomery’s 39, finished five shots back at 173, but coach Judy Bonin knows her team could have played better.
“I know we didn’t play our best today and I think any coach out here would tell you the same about their own teams. It may be just an adjustment being back in school, something they have to get used to again,” Bonin said. “Regardless I am happy with our team’s effort and especially Jordan Montgomery’s play.”
Wilson Memorial placed third with a 178 behind Michael Graves’ 42, while Chandler Marshall shot a 39 to lead Robert E. Lee to a 179.
