Waynesboro's defense wakes up

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Pom-poms and silly string were thrown into the pile of Waynesboro players lifting their helmets in the air after they celebrated their first, and only, Southern Valley District win of the season.

The Giants’ defense held Fort Defiance to 16 points and had an interception in the second quarter, a fumble recovery in the third and a interception and another fumble recovery in the forth quarter.

The Little Giants’ Jacob Lipscomb recovered the ball in the third quarter after the Indians’ Jordan Parker fumbled on the play.

“Defensively we played well as a team,” Lipscomb said. “I think we came together finally. We put a W on the board like everybody didn’t expect us to do. We just gotta keep building and building and getting stronger and stronger. I know it’s getting late in the season — we got a late start, but I’m still proud of my guys.”

It was the first district win for the Little Giants since the Southern Valley District was formed.

“This does feel like a playoff game or World Series game to us. It was a good night,” Lipscomb said.

William Bane-Harrison had a interception with 3:30 left in the first half to stop any momentum from building before going into the locker room

“It feels great, we went out there to do what we had to do,” Bane-Harrison said. “The interception felt great.”

Friday night not only gave the players a smile, but the coaching staff as well, who have been grinding the season out as well.

On the sidelines coaches and players yelled,

“That’s what I’m talking about,” when the team scored its string of touchdowns.

The Giants posted a score of 40-16.

“This is their win,” Giants’ coach Steve Isaacs said. “We are going to build on this. It is good to see these guys see the fruit of their labors. It’s very satisfying to see the look on their face, especially after having to talk to them over here when their heads were down.”
