Wilson, Gap can't break tie

FISHERSVILLE – Everything was there in the match between Wilson Memorial and Buffalo Gap on Tuesday, but after a double overtime the two teams stayed tied at 0-0.
Both teams were equally matched in height, speed, and aggression, but Wilson had one thing over Gap, conditioning. After about 10 minutes of play the Bison were already feeling the impact of the quick-footed Hornets.
“They beat us with hustle,” said Buffalo Gap coach Al Zeller. “Coach [Scott] Crist knew that his girls had more conditioning than us.”
Wilson’s Hannah Myers drained Gap even more with her fancy foot work, the orange cleats make it easy to spot.
The game started with the Bison in control of the ball, having three shots on goal in the first couple of minutes. However, the Hornets answered back with three of their own. The first half played out with even ball control on both sides. Buffalo Gap goalie Brittany Roberts had six saves in the first while Wilson goalie Marla Young had five.
Overall the Hornets had 19 shots on goal, with six close calls in the first. Wilson’s Deidre Deacon and Angelica Thacker were the ones leading the way, combining for a majority of the shots.
“I expected what I saw,” Zeller said. “Wilson is the team of the future for our district, they’re well coached.”
It was the second half that saw the most physical play from the teams, both being eager to score, though the break had no effect on the Bison who were still tired from the first. Wilson had nine shots on goal compared to Gap’s three. The Hornet’s saw their chance for an easy goal at 16:00 when Myers stepped up to the top of the box for a penalty kick. However the ball went wide, barely missing the goal.
“We had several chances that we didn’t capitalize on,” said Wilson coach Scott Crist. “Every chance you get you need to take advantage of.”
Wilson got in four more missed shots before the end of the second.
“I told them that one shot could win the game,” Crist said. “We didn’t do a good job of keeping our composure though and seemed to be in a hurry.
The two overtimes saw four more missed goals from Wilson and none from Gap.
Wilson (6-5-2, 2-2-2) host Bath county on Thursday while Buffalo Gap (11-1-1, 2-1-1) host Stonewall.
