FISHERSVILLE — Wilson Memorial never gave Nelson County a chance to think about pulling out an upset.
After only allowing the Governors to score one time in the first quarter, the Green Hornets went on to pull out a 71-35 non-district win.
All but two players on the Green Hornets’ 14-man roster put points on the board against the Govs. Wilson’s defense clicked on Friday night as well, recording 28 steals. Despite winning in dominate fashion, second-year Wilson coach Jackie Bryan was still concerned with the Green Hornets’ 21 turnovers.
“I don’t like the turnovers, I think out passing is going to go to the top of my list,” She said. [Defense] makes us go. I think when they get rattled they forget what they need to do. We are still fouling too much, I sound picky and I don’t mean to be because I’m very pleased.”
She did cut her team a little slack though, since nine of its turnovers came in the fourth quarter when the starters were on the bench.
“They haven’t had that opportunity,” Bryan said.
Bryan was able to pull her starters halfway into the third quarter after Wilson had built up a 46-15 lead.
“We still have some goals and things to work on,” she said. “We did have a good improvement. We are still missing those chippers … That’s something we will continue to work on no matter what the score is. In a way it is good, but I told them, ‘I’m going to hold your feet to the fire. You are still going to be held responsible.’ ”
The Green Hornets used most of the seconds half for preparation.
Freshman Dinah Jones paced the Green Hornets with 16 points, but was only able to bring in five rebounds, mostly due to the Governors lack of shooting. All of Jones’ points came in the first and third quarters.
“Sometimes we just have to look,” Jones said. “Sometimes I’m wide open, but I have to work on calling for the ball.”
In the first quarter Nelson couldn’t get onto the scoreboard until the 4:30 mark and Wilson easily jumped out to a 13-2 lead heading into the second frame.
Nelson tried to rally to start the second quarter with a 9-0 run that cut Wilson’s lead to two, but that was as close as the Governors would get. Wilson only allowed one more Nelson point and took a commanding 33-12 lead.
On Wednesday the Green Hornets suffered a hard 50-41 defeat to Waynesboro, which showed the team how far it had to come.
Dee Deacon, despite getting into foul trouble early in the contest, scored nine points for the Green Hornets and Mariah Taylor chipped in eight more including two 3s.
Brittany Crawford’s eight points led the Governors (0-4, 0-0 Dogwood).
Wilson Memorial (4-2, 0-0 Shenandoah) will return to action Tuesday, traveling to Madison.
Notes: The Wilson Memorial JV team won its game 69-12 against Nelson … Ashley Gochenour scored 10 points for the Green Hornets’ JV team and Megan Swortzel added nine.
