STAUNTON — Robert E. Lee only had two practices as a team before Tuesday night’s season opener against Broadway, but the Leemen played as well as a team that had been together for years.
The Leemen played with a lot of intensity early and shot the lights out as they defeated the Gobblers 89-52 in a non-district clash.
Lee coach Paul Hatcher was proud of the way his team came out and played after having only a few practices under their belts.
“I thought we played very well. We got off to a great start in the first quarter and that really set the tone and we built on it,” Hatcher said.
J.R. Gray and Dae’ Quan Scott provided the highlights early. Gray had a rim-rattling dunk that got the crowd pumped up. Scott was perfect from the field in the first half with 13 points as the teams went into the locker rooms. Gray and Scott each had 19 points for the game.
The Leemen played tough defense in the first half, only allowing the Gobblers to score four field goals. Gray was too tall and strong for the Gobbler post men to get through.
Unable to get points in the paint, the Gobblers relied on their guards to do the scoring, but they were unable to hit on their shots.
