Observation deck damaged at Iris Inn

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A fire in a three-story observation deck at The Iris Inn on Saturday night was apparently caused by discarded smoking material.

Dooms Volunteer Fire Company Chief Mike Fisher said the fire spread underneath the first-floor observation deck of the bed and breakfast, and burned the floor out.

Fisher estimated the damage at less than $10,000.

The Dooms fire chief said the fire did not do any damage to the structure of the Iris Inn, and did not require any evacuation of guests.

The fire was reported shortly before 9 on Saturday night. In addition to Dooms firefighters, firefighters from Waynesboro, Wilson, Stuarts Draft and the Preston L. Yancey Fire Company responded, as did members of the Waynesboro First Aid Crew.

The Iris Inn is located on Chinquapin Drive just outside Waynesboro.
