A house fire late Wednesday afternoon heavily damaged a Cattle Scales Road residence just outside Waynesboro. A neighbor across the street from 352 Cattle Scales, Bob Rouse said he noticed the smoke and flames coming from the house and immediately called 911. The fire was reported between 4 and 5 p.m. Firefighters from the Dooms, Preston L. Yancey, Wilson, New Hope and the Waynesboro fire departments all responded to the blaze. Dooms Fire Chief Mike Fisher said the fire was under investigation Wednesday night. While no one was inside at the time of the fire, Rouse said he went to the home after he called 911, and attempted to get a family dog to come out of the burning house. Rouse said he was unsuccessful, but said a firefighter was able to get the dog to come out.
Dooms Volunteer Fire Company Chief Mike Fisher said the fire remained under investigation Wednesday night by Augusta County.
Fisher estimated the damage to the house at $80,000, and said the dwelling belonged to Jay and Tammy Gallimore.
The fire call came in at 4:26 p.m. Fisher said it took 15 to 20 minutes to knock the flames down. Firefighters remained on the scene until after 7p.m.
