With the incumbent Wayne District supervisor watching, challenger Kurt Michael announced his plans to seek the seat Saturday at the Preston L. Yancey Volunteer Fire Company.
Michael, 47, is a science teacher at the Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School and former chairman of the Augusta County Republican Party.
He said he would aggressively pursue economic development so that the county schools, county infrastructure and fire and rescue could be funded appropriately.
“As a teacher, I hear from parents that their children are graduating from college and cannot come back to this area. Why? Because of the lack of good-paying jobs in Augusta County,” Michael told supporters.
Michael, a Fishersville resident and president of the Emerald Hills Homeowners Association, said the county has failed to implement fire plans written and updated since 2000. Michael said if the plan had been followed, a staffing crisis and low ISO rating could have been avoided at the Yancey Fire Company.
Michael said he would soon begin campaigning for the November election. “I will aggressively campaign and knock on doors to hear the concerns of citizens in the Wayne District,” Michael said.
Incumbent Wayne Supervisor Wendell Coleman attended Saturday’s announcement. Coleman said he has not made a decision about seeking re-election.
“People are pounding me to stay,” Coleman said.
“I’m interested in what he is saying,” Coleman said of Michael. “I live here.”
