An Augusta County man is being held on charges of attempted capital murder of an Augusta County deputy Friday afternoon.
Clint Tribble, whose last known address was Hite Road in Augusta County, is charged with attempted capital murder and felony eluding of police.
He also has criminal charges in Staunton, said Capt. Glenn Hanger of the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.
Hanger said Tribble’s 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup was seen on Old Greenville Road shortly after 3 Friday afternoon by Sheriff’s deputies.
When deputies approached the vehicle, Hanger said the pickup increased its speed from 40 to 80 miles per hour. Deputies put on the blue lights and siren on their cruiser and at this point, Tribble slammed on the brakes and tried to cause an accident.
The truck became stuck in a ditch, Sheriff’s investigator Joey Good approached the front and Deputy Donnie Smith approached the side. Hanger said at this point, Tribble attempted to run over Good with the truck.
Smith fired several rounds disabling the left rear wheel and the truck’s gas tank.
Hanger said the shots were fired only to disable Tribble’s truck.
The truck drove a short distance before being overtaken by the deputies in their vehicle.
Hanger said the incident ended on Stingy Hollow Road 2 miles south of Staunton.
Under the Virginia Code, a conviction on the attempted capital murder charge could carry up to life in prison.
