Editorial: Wildlife center becomes a nuthouse

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Times have been squirrelly at the Wildlife Center of Virginia this week, as more than a hundred squirrels, some so young that they hadn’t opened their eyes, came to convalesce in Waynesboro.

Like lots of humans, they were in need of help after Hurricane Irene. They were blown from or washed out of their nests.

And like other species of youngsters, the tree-dwellers have to be fed frequently and given lots of TLC. They will be weaned when they are about 8 weeks old and will be ready for release at about 12 weeks.

Unlike tourists, this bunch won’t really bring an economic boost to the region. But, as noted recently in this space, the care they receive at the wildlife center, heck the center itself, is something of which the community can be proud.
