The Waynesboro Family YMCA will enhance its security inside and outside the facility thanks to a total of $8,000 in grants awarded Thursday by the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge.
The YMCA was one of 36 competitive community grant recipients receiving a total of $190,000 in funds during a morning breakfast at Augusta Health.
YMCA Executive Director Jeff Fife said $6,000 of the money comes directly from the foundation, and another $2,000 from Jack McKee, one of the owners of McKee Foods, which has a Stuarts Draft plant.
Fife said the money awarded Thursday would be used to provide 16 security cameras — 12 inside the building and four out — at the Y. The money will also enhance outside lighting.
During the past year, Fife said there were two break-ins of cars in the Y parking lot on Wayne Avenue, and he said an employee’s office was vandalized and money taken on a Sunday during the winter.
“We are responding to some of the break-ins and enhancing security and safety,” said Fife, who noted that the Y opens at 5 in the morning and closes at 10 at night.
Organizations ranging from social service agencies to food banks and those providing housing for the needy were awarded grants Thursday by the Community Foundation.
Becky Kohler, CEO and president of the Community Foundation, told recipients that it was a day “to recognize you and your passion to each of your missions.”
Christiana Shields, the foundation’s grants manager, said the awards ranged from $2,000 to $10,000.
