More than 2,000 miles from home, a Waynesboro man wanted for attempted murder landed in jail after a hard fall from a three-story window, authorities said Tuesday.
Arthur Thomas Allen, 28, broke bones around his neck after leaping from the window at a Phoenix apartment complex, authorities said. Police arrived to find him struggling against firefighters as they attempted to restrain him, authorities said.
They soon discovered a trail of charges following him: Augusta County authorities say Allen fired shots at a car earlier this month in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven off U.S. 250 in Fishersville. Two weeks before that, he was shot in the foot at 260 N. Commerce Ave. in Waynesboro.
Augusta authorities questioned Allen on the night of the 7-Eleven shooting but said they lacked the evidence to arrest him. They released him that night but filed an attempted murder charge several days later. By then, Allen was gone.
Phoenix police found him responding to a call at 8 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex on the west side of town, said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.
Allen was transported to a hospital, where he was placed in intensive care, and on Monday, he was moved to the Fourth Avenue Jail, Holmes said.
Allen also is a suspect in Arizona in a pair of armed robberies, one May 17 at a Winslow liquor store and the other May 18 at a motel, authorities said. Charges are pending in both cases, authorities said.
Powers said the Sheriff’s Office got a call from Phoenix authorities Monday afternoon about Allen.
Depending on developments in the Arizona cases, it might be anywhere from two weeks to a year before Allen shows up in an Augusta County courtroom, county Sheriff’s Office Inv. A.C. Powers said.
In addition to attempted murder in the 7-Eleven shooting, Allen is charged with firearms violations, breaking and entering and larceny, authorities said.
Waynesboro police have not made an arrest in Allen’s shooting at North Commerce, in part, because he refused to cooperate, authorities said.
In other Waynesboro cases, Allen has been charged with credit card theft, larcenies, probation violations and destruction of property.
