A Waynesboro man wrestled a sword from his uncle, then slashed the man’s belly Tuesday afternoon outside a home on Tenth Street, police said.
The victim, 57, pulled the curved, 2-foot long cutlass on his intoxicated nephew and demanded he leave, Sgt. Kelly Walker said.
But Cevi Jamar Wade, 32, instead knocked the sword to the ground, retrieved the weapon and sliced the older man at close range, Walker said. The resulting 4-inch wound was not life-threatening, police said.
“It’s sharp as a razor,” Walker said of the sword.
He described the weapon as having a wooden handle and a curved guard over its hilt, which would protect the user’s hand. Walker said the primary use of such a weapon is for close-quarters slashing.
“On board a ship, for instance, sailors didn’t have a lot of area to parry,” he said.
Websites market such blades as “pirate swords.”
Wade wandered from the scene but was found nearby, while rescuers found his uncle leaning on a fence. He was transported to Augusta Health, police said.
Police charged Wade with malicious wounding. He is being held at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona pending a bond hearing when he sobers up, police said.
Wade was convicted in 2007 of methamphetamine and marijuana possession, according to court records.
