District hoping to slip big cuts

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Waynesboro Schools Superintendent Robin Crowder told the school board Tuesday that while he is looking at close to $2 million in funding cuts in next year’s budget, he hopes to avoid the majority of staff cuts earlier discussed.

Crowder expects he won’t have to make cuts in the third and fourth tiers of a four-tiered cut system, and should avoid most of the second tier of cuts as well.

The administrator said he anticipates the district is still looking at trimming 10 to 14 professional and support staff next year through attrition, retirement and non-renewals.

Crowder said the school district received a budget boost from the healthy participation of employees in an early retirement incentive. The deadline for that initiative was earlier this week.

When asked by Board Chairman Jeremy Taylor if the early retirements are built into the figuring for next year’s budget, Crowder said yes.

But the superintendent said the school district also must look to see which retirees must be replaced.

Also helping with the 2010-11 budget was the City Council’s Monday night move allowing $299,000 in surplus funds from last year’s budget to be transferred to the operating portion of next year’s budget.

The district is awaiting the final approval of the state budget by the General Assembly.

Legislators face a Saturday deadline for adjournment.

The Waynesboro School Board will meet on the morning of March 19 to approve the 2010-11 budget, which it hopes to deliver to the City Council in time for its March 22 meeting.

If final state numbers are not available March 19, Crowder said the school board will approve a budget and offer an amended version later.
