Former mailman pleads guilty to fraud

STAUNTON – An ex-postal worker pleaded guilty Wednesday to cheating the Staunton post office out of $20,000 to feed a gambling addiction.

Authorities arrested Christopher R. Keyes, 38, of Staunton, in April on 33 charges of obtaining money through false pretenses.

Authorities said Keyes used his personal vehicle for work and submitted multiple financial claims and logged extra miles for reimbursement.

Staunton Commonwealth’s Attorney Ray Robertson said Keyes frequently listed for reimbursement two to three times the number of miles he actually drove between April and December 2009.

Robertson dropped all but three charges in Staunton Circuit Court on Wednesday, citing Keyes’ clean criminal record, his cooperation and because he’d paid his restitution in full.

Judge Humes J. Franklin Jr. sentenced Keyes to three years of supervised probation and required the man to obtain treatment for his addiction.
