VERONA – Augusta County School Board members were told Thursday they are looking at a $5.3-million gap in expenditures and revenues in the 2010-11 budget — and that is prior to the latest proposed state cuts.
Augusta County Schools Superintendent Gary McQuain said he is still attempting to assess the local impact of Gov. Robert F. McDonnell’s Wednesday plans to cut an additional $731 million in state education funding over the next two years.
“This will get worse,’’ McQuain said during a budget work session. He informed the board that before the latest cuts, the administration is looking at expenditures of more than $97 million for next year and revenues of just under $92 million.
The superintendent hopes to have more answers about the additional cuts from the Virginia Department of Education by next week.
The board was told by Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Eric Bond that 31 teachers and administrators had already submitted requests for retirement at the end of the school year.
And McQuain said the 21 employees who are being paid this year by federal stimulus money would not be assured jobs next year.
The stimulus money would not be available. McQuain said the employees could apply for any vacancies but would not be assured of a job.
The school board will meet again on March 4 for an afternoon budget work session prior to the regular board meeting.
